IMPACT OF SMOG IN LAHORE

Once a season of scenic beauty, winter in Lahore has become clouded by thick, persistent smog. To address this escalating crisis, the provincial government has implemented strict anti-pollution measures, particularly targeting high-emission vehicles.

As part of the anti-smog campaign, traffic authorities are actively monitoring major entry points like Thokar Niaz Baig and Babu Sabu. Vehicles without pollution control—such as tractor-trolleys without tarps—are turned away, while visibly polluting vehicles are impounded. Over the last month alone, the traffic police have seized nearly 780 high-emission vehicles. Fines have also been imposed on trucks carrying dust, sand, or lacking certification, underscoring the government’s commitment to combating pollution.

Smog poses serious health risks, including respiratory and cardiovascular issues. The mix of pollutants such as ground-level ozone and particulate matter worsens conditions like asthma and lung disease, especially affecting children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health concerns. In addition to harming physical health, smog reduces air quality, lowers visibility, and increases the risk of road accidents.

The dense smog also affects vehicle health. Pollutants accelerate wear and tear on engine components, clogging air filters faster and diminishing fuel efficiency, which can lead to more frequent and costly maintenance. Smog exposure impacts vital components, like engine oil and air conditioning, particularly for vehicles in regular use.

Citizens can help reduce pollution and protect themselves with the following steps:

  • Reduce Vehicle Usage: Use public transportation, carpool, or walk short distances.
  • Maintain Vehicle Health: Regular servicing helps lower emissions.
  • Avoid Burning Waste: Burning releases harmful pollutants; proper disposal is essential.
  • Plant Trees: Trees help absorb CO₂, improving air quality.
  • Use Indoor Air Purifiers: These improve indoor air quality.
  • Stay Informed: Monitor air quality alerts and advisories.

The government urges citizens to support these initiatives for a cleaner, healthier Lahore. By adopting eco-conscious behaviors and staying informed, residents can collectively work toward a sustainable future and reclaim the winter beauty of their city.
